1) For my second independent study I am going to continue training my dog on my own and through my research learn the right ways. Also, I will keep a log of the days I go out and train her as well as create a video of her progress from the start, the middle, and the last day.
2) My Independent study component relates to my essential question because it will inform me as to what is most important when working with a guide dog and determining whether they will be a good candidate to be a guide dog in the future.

Literal:
(a) I, Samantha Esquivel, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.
(b) Attended dog obedience classes and have done training; which, have equaled to thirty hours plus more.
Interpretative:
Every weekend my family and I drive out to Palm Springs specifically for our dog obedience classes. We start out at eleven and arrive back home at three thirty. While at the classes, Kater and I train to strengthen our training for the both of us. Each week, we are assigned specific commands to learn and work on throughout the week, which we do. For example, I take her to restaurants and grocery stores so she doesn’t attack good-smelling food. Sure enough, she has made plenty of progress and we’re still learning. Its fun, but sometimes she acts like a wild child who I do not want to be associated with. This demonstrates thirty hours of work, if not more. Also, I will enroll in another class in a few months when my dog matures and I practice what I have learned with her on my own. I have remained committed to training my dog so she can become successful at becoming a guide dog. Although, it is individual I take the classes and training very seriously. During training, I work with a trainer who gives me extra tips.
Applied:
My essential question will be altered to “What is most essential to ensure the success of a service dog?” My component pertains to my essential question because through this task I have acquired observations I will need to gain a better perspective on defining my answers more and making them specific. For example, in my class there are professional trainers who I’ve asked why only fifty percent of dogs make it. But, they don’t use any grades they go based off the dog’s behavior, its aggressiveness, its ability to learn, and its willingness to learn. I have taken some of these thoughts and have come up with similar observations as I train with Kater. This class has helped me and my dog grow together and become more familiar with each other’s behaviors as the class has enabled us to do different commands we wouldn’t have practiced otherwise.

20 Minute Presentation Rough Draft:
Objective: Have my audience learn about the different methods to train a dog.
Resources/ Materials:
1) Laptop
2) Projector screen
Procedure:
1) Welcome my audience
2) Present my senior project, then my essential question, and my three possible answers plus why I chose them.
-“What is the best method to train a Labrador?” (2 min)
3) Give my class a schedule of what I will be doing for the next eighteen minutes.
4) Talk about three different training methods I have found to all be effective(10 min)
- Explain why certain methods work better with other dogs.
- Show pictures while I talk about my content.
5) Begin an activity demonstrating why certain methods won’t work.. (5 min)
6) Conclude with my opinion of the best method, and why. Yet, I will not try to talk down on any of the other methods just explain this is the method that has worked best for me so far. (2 min)
