Topic Choice

What is your topic?
-Veterinary Medicine.

Why did you choose this topic?
-My ultimate career in life is to become a vet. I have owned and been around animals my entire life. I love animals and I know what its like to interact with them on a daily basis. Currently, I'm in 4-H so I know I'll have ways to complete my service learning through this program which will open more opportunities for me in the veterinarian field and give me the chance to work with vets.

What do you hope to accomplish after studying this topic all year?
-Being a veterinarian has always been my dream; however, say after six months I realize I'm tired of it. I don't want to go through an expensive university and realize after all the money I’ve spent that this career isn't for me. I hope that spending an entire year on this topic will give me a better perspective of what it’s like to be a veterinarian. Then, I can really decide if this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. Plus, it will look good on my university resume if I decide this is the right career for me.

  1. Wow! I think it is awesome that you are in 4-H. That will give you lots of excellent opportunities.

I hope I didn't discourage you about pursuing a career in veterinary science. I just want you to think about what will make you happy in life. Money doesn't (although nobody seems to believe that including me sometimes). Still, vet school is a lot of commitment of time and money, so you should get a good idea of what you'd start off at. Keep in mind that a beginning teacher would start at $40,000 at least with benefits (this sounds like a lot, but it is a very modest income and wouldn't buy you a house on your own). Of course, you don't want to ask the question right away or be super direct as it would look like you don't have a real interest, but as you develop relationships with some vets, you might ask things like "Did you have to take a lot of loans to go to vet school? Were they hard to pay back? What do vets in this area make when they first start working?"

Let's say that you decide midway through this year that you don't want to be a vet. What will keep you going then? How will this topic still help you?

You might also want to think about other careers that might involve animals...I don't really know these, but I bet a vet would.

  2. Also, the title of your first blog entry should be topic choice. Your label for it should be Research Semester 1.
